How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance comes in many different forms. Some people are insured through their company, while others purchase their own plan independently. Depending on how your policy is customized, you may have different restrictions associated with your benefits. But one thing all dental insurance plans have in common is that they entitle you to discounts on various services. Coverage can vary, but most dental insurance providers break it down like this:
- Preventative care (like biannual checkups and cleanings) receives 90% to 100% coverage.
- Basic treatments (like fillings and simple extractions) receive up to 80% coverage.
- Major treatments (crowns, root canals, surgical extractions, etc.) receive 50% coverage.
What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance
Dental and medical insurance have different priorities when it comes to offering coverage. As you can see from the overview above, dental insurance plans emphasize preventive care that will help you avoid oral conditions altogether. Medical insurance is typically for more general health concerns and provides more benefits for problems you’re currently experiencing.
Note that there is some overlap when it comes to TMJ treatment. Depending on the details of your plan, you might use your dental insurance to offset your costs – or you might use your medical insurance.
In-Network VS. Out-of-Network
You’re likely familiar with the terms “in-network” and “out-of-network,” especially if you have a PPO dental insurance plan. Basically, if a dentist is “in-network” with a dental insurance provider, it means they’ve pre-negotiated prices for certain treatments, as outlined in your plan. But the practices your insurance provider has selected aren’t always the best dental team for you! Out-of-network offices like ours are often still willing to accept various policies and can provide comparable prices for services. So don’t hesitate to see a dentist you trust, even if they haven’t negotiated with your dental insurance company.
